The sunset slot (6pm departure) is the most popular for hen and stag groups and books up fastest — especially during summer. Arriving at the marina at 5:45pm, departing at 6pm, the cruise catches the golden hour over Lisbon as you pass the Belem Tower, sails along the northern bank under the bridge, and returns as the city lights come on. The light during those three hours is something you remember for years.
Morning and afternoon slots are equally beautiful with a different character. Morning is quieter — fewer boats on the water, the city waking up, a more relaxed atmosphere for groups that want a proper chill session before the evening out. A boat party on the River Tagus is, for our money, the single best afternoon or evening a stag or hen group can have in Lisbon. You get the city's whole waterfront laid out in front of you — the red 25 de Abril bridge, the Cristo Rei statue watching over the south bank, Belém Tower in the distance — plus a DJ, a bar, sunshine, and forty of your favourite people in one place with nowhere else to be. It is the part of the weekend everyone films.
But "boat party Lisbon" covers everything from a per-person ticket on a 200-person party boat to a private catamaran that is yours alone for the afternoon. Book the wrong one for your group and you will either be squeezed onto a stranger's stag do or paying yacht money for a pedalo. This guide walks you through exactly what is out there, what it costs in 2026 and 2027, where the boats leave from, and the handful of things UK groups get wrong every single summer.
The two kinds of boat party in Lisbon (get this right first)
Almost every "boat party" in Lisbon is one of two things. Which one suits you depends entirely on your group size and how much you want the day to be yours.
1. Shared / ticketed party boats. You buy tickets per person and join a public sailing on a big multi-deck boat with anywhere from 40 to 200+ other people. There is a live DJ, a bar, and a fixed route and timetable. It is cheap, lively, and brilliant if you are a smaller group happy to party alongside strangers. The downside: it is not your boat. The music, the route, the crowd and the vibe are set for you, and if half your stags want the terrace and the other half want the dancefloor, you are sharing both.
2. Private charters. You hire the whole boat — sailing boat, catamaran or larger event vessel — and it is yours for the booked time with your own skipper and crew. Your group, your playlist, your pace. This is what we recommend for almost every stag and hen group of ten or more, because the whole point of the weekend is that it is about you, not a random ticket crowd. Swim off the back, bring the sash and the inflatable, upgrade the bar, add a BBQ, and treat the boat like your own floating venue.
There is also a third, gentler option — the sunset cruise: shorter, more relaxed, drinks and views rather than a full DJ set. Lovely for a hen group who want the golden-hour photos without a rave, or as the classy opener before a big night out.
Shared ticket or private charter — which works out better?
The right boat depends on your group size, your date and what you want included, so we quote every group individually rather than post a "from" price that never actually applies to yours. What we can do is show you how to think about it.
Shared tickets are the most affordable way onto the water and are priced per person — ideal for a small group (4–8) happy to join a public boat. Watch the small print: "open bar" on a ticketed boat usually means a welcome drink and one or two included, then pay-as-you-go, and some central ferry-station departures add a small boarding tax collected at check-in.
Private charters are priced per boat, so the more of you there are, the better the per-head maths gets. For a stag or hen of ten-plus, a private catamaran often works out only a little more per person than tickets — while giving you the whole boat, your own playlist and your own pace.

Where do boat parties leave from in Lisbon?
All the action is on the western waterfront, strung along the Tagus. The main departure docks you will come across are:
- Doca de Alcântara — the busiest party-boat dock, right by the LX Factory nightlife.
- Doca de Santo Amaro — a marina lined with bars and restaurants directly under the 25 de Abril bridge; a brilliant spot for pre-boat drinks.
- Cais Rocha Conde de Óbidos and Doca do Espanhol (Av. Brasília) — two more working party-boat docks a little further west.
- Cais do Sodré / Terreiro do Paço — central departures used by many ticketed cruises, easy to reach on foot from the city centre.
- Belém — the westernmost, out by Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries.
Wherever you leave from, the route shows off the same greatest hits: the Ponte 25 de Abril (Lisbon's own Golden-Gate lookalike), the Cristo Rei statue across the water at Almada, Belém Tower, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, and the honey-coloured city rising up its seven hills. It photographs unbelievably well, especially with the light going gold.
Which boat is right for your group size?
- Up to ~10–12: a private sailing boat is intimate, good value and easy to book. Perfect for a tight-knit stag or a hen group who want to actually talk to each other.
- 12–18: a private catamaran is the sweet spot — stable, loads of deck space, room for a proper party without anyone feeling penned in.
- 18–30+: a larger event boat, or two catamarans run together. This is where "we hired a boat" becomes the story of the whole weekend.
- Small group (4–8) on a budget: grab tickets on a shared party boat and enjoy the crowd. It is the most affordable way onto the water.
What's usually included — and what to bring
On a shared ticket, expect a welcome drink plus a drink or two, a live DJ, life jackets and a loo, and sometimes free club entry afterwards. Extra drinks and any food are normally paid on the day.
On a private charter, expect the skipper and crew, fuel and a welcome drink included, then you build the rest: a full open bar, BBQ or tapas catering, extra hours, a birthday/hen cake, water toys for a swim stop.
Bring: sun cream, a layer for when the wind picks up in the afternoon, flat shoes or bare feet (no stilettos on deck), swimwear if your boat does a swim stop, and a fully charged phone for the non-stop photos.
The mistakes UK groups make (and how to avoid them)
We see the same avoidable slip-ups every summer. Do not be these lads.
Booking too late. Lisbon's best boats sell out in peak season — June, July and August weekends go first, and 2027 dates are already being reserved. For a summer stag or hen, lock the boat in several weeks ahead; for a big private charter, earlier still. Leaving it to the week before is how you end up on the only boat left — which is the only boat left for a reason.
Turning up late for boarding. Private docks want you there 10–15 minutes early. Ticketed departures from the ferry stations often want you 30–40 minutes early to collect wristbands from a booth — and if you miss the boat, there is usually no refund. Do not schedule the boat right after a long lunch with drinks.
The "one lad's only 17" problem. Boat parties are 18+ and ID is checked at boarding. If someone is under 18 or has not got ID on them, they do not get on. Sort it before you travel.
Assuming you can bring your own music and drinks. On a shared party boat the DJ and the bar are fixed — you cannot plug your own playlist in, and outside drink is generally a no. On a private charter you have far more freedom (your playlist, and often BYO with the operator's OK). If controlling the music matters, that alone is a reason to go private.
Mistiming the sunset. Midsummer Lisbon sunsets land roughly between 8:30 and 9:15pm, earlier as you move into September. If the golden-hour photos are the goal, pick a slot that puts sunset in the middle of your cruise, not right at the end when you are already docking.
Worrying about seasickness. Do not, much. The Tagus estuary is wide and largely sheltered — it is a river, not the open Atlantic — so it is calm compared with a sea trip. The wind does pick up in the afternoon, so if anyone is truly prone to it, a morning or early-evening slot is smoother.
