Albufeira is really two places. The Strip (Avenida Sá Carneiro) is the neon, mini-Vegas end: big clubs, international DJs kicking off around 1–2am, and drinks flowing all night. It is a magnet for hen and stag groups and it is brilliant fun if a full-throttle night out is the entire point. Albufeira Old Town is prettier and more grown-up: cobbled squares, cocktail bars, live music and a mixed-age crowd. Our take for most hens is to base near the Old Town for the charm and taxi over to The Strip for the one big night. Albufeira suits groups who want maximum nightlife with everything walkable.
Vilamoura — the classier, marina choice
Vilamoura is the polished pick. It is built around a glossy marina lined with superyachts, upmarket restaurants and beach clubs, and it is the best boat-party launch point in the region. It feels more exclusive and calmer than Albufeira — ideal for a classier or mixed-age hen who wants beach-club days and stylish dinners over sticky-floor clubs. There is nightlife, but it leans marina-bar rather than mega-club, and it is the easiest transfer from Faro (around 25km). If your bride wants Instagram-ready and refined, this is her base.
Lagos — pretty, beachy and west
Lagos is the laid-back westerly option: stunning coastline, a buzzing but younger, more bohemian nightlife, and the launch point for boat trips through the Ponta da Piedade sea caves. It is a longer, scenic drive from Faro (about 90 minutes), so factor that in — but for a group that puts beaches and boat trips over club strips, it is gorgeous.

Best time of year for an Algarve hen weekend
The sweet spot is May to September. July and August are the warmest (highs around 29°C) but also the busiest and priciest. The insider's pick is the shoulder season — June and September: warm sun, sea around 20°C, beach clubs and boats in full swing, but fewer crowds and better villa availability. May and early October still deliver lovely warm days too. Book a hen in June and you get peak-season energy without peak-season chaos — often with a better villa for the same money. And because the Old Town and the marina run year-round, even an off-season hen is far from dead.
How many days should you plan?
Three days / two nights is the sweet spot, and what most of our hens book: fly in Friday, party Saturday, fly home Sunday. It gives you a full boat-party-and-beach-club day, one big night out and a recovery brunch, without anyone burning a week of annual leave. Got a keen group and a generous timeline? Will it be dead if we go off-season?
Not at all. Albufeira's Old Town and Vilamoura marina run year-round and the Algarve winters mild. May, June, September and early October are our secret weapon — warm sun, swimmable sea, boats and beach clubs fully running, and far fewer crowds than August. The party is very much on, just cheaper and less chaotic.
