DISCOVER PORTUGUESE WINE IN LISBON
Portugal produces some of the finest wines in Europe — and most visitors never get beyond a glass of house wine at dinner. This session changes that completely. Five premium Portuguese wines, an expert sommelier who actually makes the subject entertaining rather than pompous, proper food pairings, and a private cellar setting that feels nothing like a classroom. Your group leaves knowing exactly what they're drinking, why it's special, and where to buy it back home.
The wine tasting works as a brilliant afternoon activity before dinner, a civilised alternative to another bar for stag groups who want something more refined, and a consistent highlight for hen groups who appreciate quality over quantity. Two hours, five wines, proper pairings, full cheese and charcuterie board — you emerge relaxed, sociable and ready for the evening ahead.
The tasting covers the full breadth of Portuguese wine — from the crisp, bone-dry Vinho Verde of the northern Minho region, through rich Douro reds, structured Alentejo whites, and finishing with the legendary fortified wines from the Douro Valley. The sommelier matches the session to your group's existing knowledge so complete beginners and wine enthusiasts both walk away having genuinely learned something. It's the best possible introduction to Portuguese wine in two hours.

WHAT IT ACTUALLY FEELS LIKE
The session runs for two hours starting at 12pm, 3pm or 6pm. The 3pm slot is the most popular — it fills the afternoon perfectly before a 7:30pm or 8pm dinner and sets the group in exactly the right mood. The cellar is in central Lisbon, a 5-minute walk from most hotel clusters and easily reachable by metro or taxi.
The sommelier opens with a short introduction to Portuguese wine regions — Vinho Verde, Douro, Dão, Alentejo, Porto — and then you start tasting. Each wine is introduced with its region, grape varieties, production method and ideal food pairing. The charcuterie and cheese board arrives with the second wine and carries through to the fifth. The format is interactive rather than lectured — groups ask questions, debate which wine they prefer, and by the third wine are genuinely engaged with the subject.
The blind tasting challenge at the end is consistently the highlight. Group members rank the wines without knowing what they're drinking, and the results are always surprising. Once the tasting finishes, most groups transition naturally to a Portuguese dinner at 7:30pm or 8pm — the sommelier often recommends specific restaurants and wines to order. Get in touch and we can book both activities together.
I thought I didn't like wine. Turns out I just hadn't tried the right ones. The sommelier was brilliant — funny, knowledgeable, genuinely passionate. We bought three bottles to take home on the spot and the whole group ordered Portuguese wine at dinner.
BUILT FOR HEN PARTIES & CIVILISED STAG GROUPS
The wine tasting is perfect for hen parties who want a sophisticated afternoon activity that still feels celebratory. It pairs brilliantly with the cocktail workshop — wine in the afternoon, cocktails later, full afternoon of quality drinking that builds naturally into the evening out.
For stag groups, the wine tasting is the civilised option — a break from beer and shots, a chance to genuinely learn something, and a proper excuse to keep drinking in the afternoon without peaking too early. Groups who've tried it consistently say it was one of the unexpected highlights of the weekend.
Minimum group size is 6, maximum is 25. The cellar can comfortably handle larger groups of up to 30 with advance notice. The format works for mixed-age groups, mixed-experience groups and groups where some members don't drink — the sommelier can include premium Portuguese juices and non-alcoholic wines for non-drinkers.
REAL REVIEWS FROM REAL GROUPS
Over 500 groups have booked through Fun in Portugal since 2008. These are what they say about wine tasting lisbon specifically.
We knew nothing about Portuguese wine going in. We left obsessed with it. The sommelier was hilarious and genuinely passionate — it felt like being taught by someone who actually loves what they do. Brilliant session.
Did the wine tasting before dinner and it completely set the tone. The Douro reds were incredible — we ordered the same bottle at dinner that night. Great activity, not boring at all, proper insight into Portuguese wine.
The cheese board was a genius touch. Wine, cheese, charcuterie, good company. The hen was absolutely in her element. Two of us have since signed up to wine courses at home. That's how good it was.
