Albufeira — the default stag base
This is where most Algarve stags stay, and for good reason. Albufeira is really two places. The Strip (Avenida Sá Carneiro) is the neon nightlife hub — a flat, pedestrian-friendly run of bars and big clubs, everything walkable so you never need a taxi between venues. Bars open late; the clubs kick off around 1am and run till 6am in summer. Loud, cheap and unashamedly party-first. Albufeira Old Town is prettier and calmer — cobbled squares, cocktail bars and restaurants around the Fisherman's Beach, ideal for the group dinner and warm-up. Our tip for most stags: base near the Old Town for the charm and taxi up to the Strip for the big nights, so you are not sleeping above a nightclub. Albufeira gives you the Strip and the boat party in one spot.
Vilamoura — the classier / golf stag
Vilamoura is built around a glossy marina lined with superyachts, upmarket bars and restaurants, and it is the closest base to Faro (around 25 minutes). It is the pick for an older stag, a golf-led trip, or a group that wants the boat party and a smart marina night out over full Strip chaos. It is also the best boat-party launch point in the region, and the three marquee golf courses — Vilamoura, Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago — are right on the doorstep.
Lagos — younger, beachy, west
Lagos is the laid-back westerly option: a real Portuguese town with a lively (if more spread-out) bar scene, stunning coastline at the Ponta da Piedade cliffs, and the closest base to the west-coast surf. It is the furthest from Faro (about an hour to an hour and a quarter), so factor the drive — but for a younger, surf-and-beach crew who will trade the mega-strip for scenery, it is gorgeous.

Best time of year for an Algarve stag
The sweet spot is May to September: hot, dry, reliable sun, and a sea warm enough for the boat party and watersports. July and August are the warmest and the Strip at full tilt — but the busiest and priciest, so book the villa and the boat well ahead. The insider's pick is the shoulder season, June and September: peak-season energy without the peak-season chaos or prices. May and early October still bring lovely warm days, though evenings cool off. The full big-club Strip experience really runs Easter through October and peaks in summer, so time a nightlife-first stag accordingly.
How many days should you plan?
Three days / two nights is the sweet spot and what most of our Algarve stags book: fly in Friday, headline day Saturday, home Sunday. It fits a full boat-party day, one enormous Strip night and a recovery by the pool without burning a week of leave. Got a keen group? A four-day / three-night version lets you split a daytime activity (golf, karting, the caves) from the big night so nobody is running on fumes. Two nights is the minimum — one is not worth the flights.
Where to stay — why a villa often wins for a stag
A private villa is a brilliant stag base: your own pool for beers and pre-drinks, total privacy, no noise complaints, room to spread out, and a base that is part of the weekend rather than a cramped hotel corridor. It keeps the whole group under one roof — no one texting "which room are you in?" at 2am. The one trade-off is that you taxi to the Strip, so some groups prefer an apartment right on/near the Strip for the walk home and sleep above the noise. A common play is a villa or apartment a short taxi from the Strip — the best of both. Getting from Faro airport
You will fly into Faro (FAO) — cheap direct flights from most UK airports, quick to clear. It is roughly 25 minutes to Vilamoura (about 26km), 40–45 minutes to Albufeira (about 40km), and around an hour to an hour and a quarter west to Lagos. When does the Strip actually kick off?
Late — bars fill from around 11pm and the big clubs from about 1am, running to 6am in summer. Do the Old Town or marina dinner first and hit the Strip around midnight, not at 10pm when it is quiet.
Villa or hotel for a stag?
