Estoril and Cascais are stylish and fashionable Portuguese residential areas/beach resorts that are situated on the beautiful coastline that extends to the west of Lisbon! They strike the perfect balance between Portuguese charm and excellent tourist facilities, to create the ideal destination for those visitors who want more than just great beaches for their holiday. Both towns boast fine restaurants, world-class hotels and Estoril is home to the the largest casino of the Iberian Peninsula. All of these provide the area with a prosperous atmosphere and a reputation for exclusivity.
Praia do Guincho – where we will cycle – is 8 km to the north of Cascais so is technically not in the Estoril coastline but is so great that it needs to be listed. Guincho beach faces a westerly direction and is pounded by massive Atlantic Ocean waves, ideal for experienced surfers. The beach is situated in the Serra de Sintra national park so there is almost not tourist development, just massive sand dunes and steep cliffs.
Itinerary
- After meeting we will head to the promenade for an enjoyable 3km walk to Estoril and back. The route follows the sea walls and sea defences that line the beaches and rock outcrops of the coastline. The promenade is flat and is suitable to visitors of all ages and abilities. The Estoril promenade passes many of the region’s quaintest beaches and there are many interesting sights, historical buildings and outdoor cafes.
- Once we are back in Cascais we will get on our bikes and ride to the stunning, surfing beach of Praia de Guincho following a purpose built cycle path. This 10km round trip is an enjoyable half day tourist and local activity. The route follows the dramatic cliff coastline and passes multiple interesting sights. No shortage of cafes, patisseries, and restaurants along the way and when we finish.
